2005 Silver Eagle - A $40 value???

I know absolutely nothing about numismatics, so perhaps someone can enlighten me. How can a 2005 silver eagle be a $40 value? It does not even say that it is a proof.

Background, I just got in the mail, an offer through my credit card company. If a call a number, they will send me (for free) a 2005 silver eagle (a $40 value!!). All I have to pay is $4.95 for processing and handling.

Don't worry, I won't call the number. By doing so I will be giving them my account number and mailing information (I read the fine print  ), and they made no privacy guarantees.

But how can they justify their claim that the coin is a $40 value?

does it come with one of those pretty velvet lined boxes?
that's gotta be worth 40 bux alone!
ooooooh, pretty velvet! (haw)

seriously, they tend to make outlandish value claims.

I would rather have an old tarnished silver spoon from one of Ponce's garage sales...

I don't think I would get a pretty little soft velvet box with mine though. :D

:hahaha: hahahaha

You only get one. ANd they don't specify what you have to do to get that one. It seems to be some kind of consumer market research thing. THey will probably ask you a bunch of questions, then sell your responses to firms who want market research data, and sell your contact info (including credit card #) to anyone who will pay for it.

I think that's more hassle than its worth, just to save $2.30 on an oz of Ag.

Are you looking for roommates? Always had a soft spot in my heart for the Blue Mountains, especially Joseph and Enterprise. Unfortunately Hood River got too darned expensive (the old family home).

As for me born in Bend,..... and I miss it.

oh yes, you can count on marketers coming out of the woodwork, junk mail, telemarketers, door to door (well, more of directly to your door).
if a $2.30/oz savings is worth that, go for it.

hucksters, you gotta love their spunk!

Not only marketers!! I'm more worried about identity theft because there is NO explicit promise that they will not release my credit card number and name/mailing info to whomever asks!

Now, now, I'm sure you could redeem yourself if you would quit calling the lustrous, bright white metal "sludge" and say something nice about it.:proud: I know you are so deep into your "shiney" that you are afraid to say something nice about silver, because as soon as the words come out of your mouth the price of silver will skyrocket and we (silverbugs) will swoop in and pick up your "shiney" for half price.:bandito: Let go of your fears....take a deep breath....say silver is a once in a generation opportunity.....repeat....

hey man, what are you smokin'? and are you gonna share?
redeem myself? methinks Mr. Butler owes his entire flock an apology for not checking his facts before he presents his scare tactics.

i never said sludge isn't a good investment, just it's not as great as some would have you believe, and it is too bulky for a serious investor, it's just fine for the people that want to pretend.

I had already taken a serious position in silver before I had read Butler's essays. I started getting concerned about the devalueing dollar and started following gold and silver, at the time gold was in the low 300's and silver was in the mid 4's. By the time I could liquidate some assets to invest, gold had already made it's move to the high 300's and silver was in the high 4's, the decision was pretty easy at that point. In retrospect, it was the right choice.

I don't pay much attention to the fantastical (except while daydreaming) predictions on future silver prices....I just watch the gold to silver ratio...and at approx. 60 to 1 (last time I looked) I see a lot of potential.

I'm not a serious investor anyway, I'm speculator or if you please, a get-rich quick riverboat gambler :smokin: :bandito:

Re: 2005 Silver Eagle - A $40 value???

I took one for the team.

I already "took advantage" of this offer months ago. The name of this outfit is National Consumer Marketing or something like that. Out of Ithica, New York, if i recall.

Got on the phone, requested my $4.95 '05 Eagle. Certainly, they said. And would I like a free '03 Eagle as well, just for agreeing to peruse one of their lovely Peace Dollars, valued at $39.99(!)? I could always send it back if i dont like it. Okay, said I. Great! And would I also like to receive a free....
No thanks, that's it for now.

True to word, I got my free '03 Eagle in the mail a couple days later, along with the '05 and the Peace dollar. All was well, until I spied the invoice.

They charged 6.95 for shipping the peace dollar, which was in no way revealed over the phone. They billed my credit card for 4.95 plus 39.99 plus 6.95 immediately. THis annoyed me no end, so I called and asked why they billed my card for the peace dollar and shipping, when i hadnt agreed to buy it yet.

No problem, they said, just send the Peace dollar back, and we'll refund you the 39.99. But what about the 6.95 shipping?

No can do. After squabbling for 5 minutes or so, I gave up. Mailed the Peace dollar back (had to supply postage on my own) and called it a day.

Month or so later I check my card statement to find I still had not been credited the 39.99. Called up NCM and asked what gives.

They "never received it". After about 10 minutes of arguing, I finally did convince them I did in fact mail it. And they credited my account.

The upshot of it all is that I got an Eagle for 4.95 and 6.95. But in no way was it worth the nonsense. To me, that is. If this rigamarole sounds fun to you, then go for it.

Hernancortes,

sorry to hear that, but you have earned a bit of peace in a later life for your heroic gesture.

12 bux + return postage, for 2 eagles, still under spot?
but how many didn't complain, send the Peace buck back, accepted the fact "we did not receive it" and are out 12+postage+Peace dollar?

scam artists are everywhere, getting rich off others.

And as PMs rise in value, more scams will come to surface.
